A World of Words

Words are weapons of violence

Words are tools of peace

Words are never the reality itself

Words can only point to reality

Reality can be only partially expressed by words that are by nature simply signs and symbols

Reality can only be understood through direct experience by the heart; not the head, not words

Words thoughtlessly spoken in haste create a firestorm leaving destruction in their wake

Words mindfully spoken in love create a fountain of encouragement nurturing healing

YOU CHOOSE

Do we choose death by using a language of dominance; better-than, being-right, knowing?

Do we choose life by using a language of peace; inquiry, seeking understanding, openness?

When a person encounters another person, both go away changed; for better or worse

Are we mindful of each and every word we use; and whether we are instilling it with life or death?

Often it is not WHAT we say but HOW we say it

… with a heart of humility or the arrogance of knowing?

Do we edify, build up, encourage, and appreciate the “other”;

… especially those that differ from us?

Do our words honor and respect the values and beliefs of the “other”;

… especially those that think differently from us?

Do we speak to the “other” especially those that are different

… in the same way that we want to be treated?

Words destroy relationships when spoken out of a mind of arrogance and knowing

Words mend and nurture relationships when spoken out of a heart of humility and curiosity

Words shut down all learning when we already “know”

Because we all know that if we already know, we can no longer learn

Words open up a world of wonder when they open up our hearts to seek understanding

… more than to be understood

Words open up a world of beauty when they open up our hearts to seek to love

… more than to be loved

Words open up a world of curiosity when they open up our hearts to seek to listen

… more that to be heard

Words open up a world of harmony when they open up our hearts to seek to comfort

… more than to be comforted

“Gotta seek the silence of the soul’s wild places to find a voice that will cross the spaces”

(Bruce Cockburn)
